In Tibetan culture, khatas—or katak, hada, khadag—symbolize one’s pure intention and reverential salutation. They are traditionally presented on special occasions, such as meeting with an incarnate Lama, at the time of births, graduations, weddings, receiving a special Buddhist initiation, and upon the arrival or departure of guests or cherished ones. The khata can also serve as an elegant wrapping when presenting or carrying a precious gift, such as a Buddhist statue or thangka.

Our finest extra long silk khatas, or ceremonial offering scarves, are woven with the sacred Ashatamangala, Eight Auspicious Symbols, prevalent among eastern religions. In Tibetan Buddhism, each of the 8 good luck symbols traditionally carries a special meaning. They are: the endless knot, lotus flower, victory banner, wheel of dharma, treasure vase, pair of golden fish, parasol, and conch shell. Available in the 5 elemental colours, representative of the 5 buddha families.

Made in Nepal. Measures 250 x 55 cm.
